In my hunt for some essential items, I planned to pack for my excursion to New York City.I noticed a jumbo packet of Gummy Bears lying around; Delighted, I added it to my little pile that included my iPod, cell phone, wallet and a detailed map of New York City. Because you can get mugged in New York City, I added these important items to the zip-pocket of my black trousers. After putting the essentials in my
ameribag, I zipped it very dramatically. My fate was sealed. The feeling of running away to New York City, even for a short time, was exciting. I knew the entire time that my mom was going to kill me when I get back. However, I simply couldn't miss a Guns N' Roses concert so I was willing to take my chances.
A glance at the clock made me jump with alarm; the concert was due to start in merely five hours.I had bought a North Jersey Coast Line train ticket in a delirious bout of euphoria and I just had enough time to reach New York City by the train and to find my way through the labyrinth to the heart of the city and my destination: Madison Square Garden. Without hesitation I escaped. As I passed by my mother's room on my way to the exit, a haunting sound stopped me in my tracks.
Someone let out a heavy sigh and then it turned into a whimper. Impulse made me run to my mother's bedroom. I peered through the door that was half-open. She was distraught as though I had rendered her heartbroken. Her eyes were dull and red-rimmed.Even though they were repressing unshed tears, they expressed a profound vulnerability, defeat and despondency. Her hair was a mess, and her head hung low.The foreboding frown and stress-lines on her face intensified my remorse. There were butterflies in my stomach because I was nervous, and I felt a pang at my heart. The concert seemed unimportant and irrelevant now as a flung my
ameribag away and kneeled in front of Mama.I clutched her hand in mine and smoothed back her hair delicately. Finally mother smiled back.I realized that a night of bonding with her was worth more than the Guns N' Roses concert.
